Background 

Phil Davey is a Senior Technician in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Essex, where he has supported plant productivity and environmental research for almost 20 years. With a strong research background, he has trained staff and students and supported research activities at home and abroad. During the COVID‑19 lockdowns, Phil single-handedly maintained essential plant populations on campus to protect critical, world-leading research. In 2022, he was shortlisted as a finalist in the Technician of the Year category at the Times Higher Education Awards, recognising his contribution to plant science at Essex.

Experience in Knowledge Exchange

Phil’s route into Knowledge Exchange began when an academic colleague invited him to contribute to a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). He has since worked on two KTPs, from co-authoring the bids to delivering the projects as co-supervisor. The first, with APC Bioscience, explored tools for understanding photosynthesis. The second, with Vertical Future, focuses on efficient lighting recipes for vertical farming.

Taking part in Knowledge Exchange has not only broadened the scope of Phil’s work, but it has also built on the expertise he has developed throughout his career. By working alongside industry partners, Phil has had the opportunity to see how his technical skills can be applied to real-world challenges and commercial opportunities. This experience has given him a valuable insight into the wider impact of his work and allowed him to further develop his confidence in collaborative settings, all while continuing his day-to-day technical role.

Engagement with T-PIKE

Phil is now looking to engage with T‑PIKE by developing plant science resources for schools. This initiative will enhance outreach, showcase the University’s expertise in Life Sciences, and inspire students to explore the opportunities within the field.
